The Paradise known as Lofoten !

Road to the Lofoten !

Tuesday morning (00.30) Matthew and I decided to take the next ferry from Bodø to Lofoten.
Since we both wanted to travel to Lofoten, we decided to make the way together. We were fortunate enough to find a host on short notice.

The ferry left Bodø at 1.30 and arrived in Moskenes (Lofoten) around 5.00. Since it was snowing and the ferry was empty, we managed to stay until 6.30 on the boat to sleep a bit more.

It was still very dark when we left the boat, but we wanted to try to hitch hike anyways. It was only 60 km. to Leknes, where Gøran our host lives. But in the cold, dark, blistering wind it seemed much further away. Just as we realized our chances of hitch hiking on this desolate road (E10) were next to impossible, we watched the bus to Leknes drive past us...  Unlucky Morning ---> Welcome to Lofoten !
Matthew, who isn't as well equipped as I, was VERY cold; to the point that his hands were blood red and painful. After nearly one hour and a half outside, we decided to go back to the bus station (indeed, a schoolbus driver advised us to wait there since there were toilets and a slightly heated space).

The next bus arrived precisely on time at 9.10 <sigh of relief>. The Lofoten adventure finally begins!
I was hardly in my seat when a warm welcoming, " Bonjour!" took me by surprise. Here I am, riding a bus with something like 6 people - on a very remote island in the far breaches of the north -  and a couple of Morbihannais are sitting right next to me! :) Such a small world!

I thought that 60 km should be 1h by car but by bus and with the snow it was longer than expected (nearly 2h). We were tired but the scenery was so exceptional that we tried to keep our eyes wide open, even if it wasn't so easy!

In Leknes at 11.00, Gøran picked us up and brought us to his home in Farstad (5 min from the sentrum). With such lack of sleep we spent the afternoon at his place.

The day after we decided to hitch hike again to discover the island on which we are, named Vestvagøy.

It worked quite well, and quickly at that. A men stopped in Leknes almost immediately. A young journalist, Jon, wants to photograph a small whale washed up on a beach. He drove us from one beach to another, showed us a variety of mountains, and filled us with local history and information regarding the nature here. For 3 consecutive days! He was born on the island, and has lived here his whole life. A real local guide! We would never have expected such fortune!! So it goes livin' life on the road...

This encounter allowed us to discover a big part of Vestvagøy with expending our energy! Thanks a lot for this!
